Fun Maths!

Today in maths the Hearts and the Spades did maths outside on the snakes and ladders turf. We took turns standing on the numbers. Each person was told how many steps to move forward or back and the rest of the group had to work out what number they would land on.

Eg. Logan moves 2 spaces and then had to move another 3 forward. What number will he land on?

Ava moved 4 spaces forward and then 2 places back. What number will she land on?

We all had turns writing and moving and it was lots of fun!!

Week 2 Achievements

A big congratulation this week for everyone who competed in the Kaniere School athletics. It was a fun day with everyone giving it a go and trying their best!!

Also congratulations to this weeks certificate winners who were awarded for showing the school values. Ka pai!

Computational Thinking with David Kinane

In our first week back at school we had Mr Kinane with us teaching us all about computational thinking with some unplugged activities.

We learnt all about weaving with an over-under code. We tried it with all different colours of paper and had to copy each other's patterns as well as making our own and then had to check them for bugs and debug our codes.

It was lots of fun and we can't wait to do some more coding.

Growing Our Seedlings

On the last day of term 3 we all planted our own seedlings as part of the Little Garden League. We had one each and our job was to protect them over the holidays and help them grow.

Today we all brought them back to school and look how much they have all grown!! We were great at looking after them to give them everything they needed and now they are ready to be planted in our school garden.

Last week I was the star of the week and it was really fun because it was Māori language week. We learnt the colours in te reo and sung a song about it. On Friday we had hapu sports which is where we break up into our 4 school hapu's and then we took turns playing different games. I am in the orange hapu which is called Rimu.

Student Spotlight - Ava

This week we did an experiment were we put sharp pencils into a little bag of water and a big bag of water. I thought the bag was going to explode but it didn't because it just got a wee hole and the water came out like a waterfall. We thought Miss Pugh was magic.

Crystal Making

For the last two weeks, we have been making crystals and watching them grow. We made them using borax, water and food colouring and then put a straw or pipe cleaner into the jar.

We finally took them out of the jars this week and this is what they looked like.

Student Spotlight - Evie

Last week we brought in a box and we wrote about what we thought was in it.
When we opened it the parts to set up a little garden league clubhouse was inside. It came with a mailbox. We had to write letters and fill out an application to be in the club and post it in the box.

Daffodil Day

Today we celebrated Daffodil Day at Kaniere School!
Our class did really well at dressing up. Some people had daffodils pinned to their tops, others had yellow hairspray and yellow face paint and we all were given a tattoo for giving a gold coin donation.
The whole school got dressed up and we are going to see everyone's outfits at assembly time.

Art for the Westland District Library

Last week We had Krystel, a librarian from the Westland District Library come and visit our class. We read a Book that won book of the year and then made some very cool suns out of paper plates, yarn and crepe paper.
Our artwork is on display at the library if you would like to go and see it.

Here are the photos of our finished products.

Student Spotlight - Sophie

This week we had Kris from the library come and read us the story Abigail and the Birth of the Sun. After that, we did some sun art and it was fun because we got to put yellow strings hanging off the bottom.

For writing this week we watched a video about a bridge, a bear, a moose, a rabbit and a racoon. They were fighting about who got to go to the other side. We made an animation on explain everything retelling the story and then wrote about what we thought the ending would be. I said that maybe the racoon and the rabbit will fight because they wanted to get to the other side like the bear and the moose.

Here is my animation

Student Spotlight - Logan

Last week for writing we got to write about anything we wanted. I wished that I had a PlayStation 4 so that I could play games with my brother. I enjoyed this writing because I got to write about what I like.

Next time I do writing I want to write about what I do with my family after school.

Here is my writing.

Matariki art

This week in Ruma Weka we did matariki art.
First, we painted the stars onto the black paper for the background. Then we ripped the paper to create the mountains. Then we used the soft pastels to colour the tops of the mountains. Then we rubbed the pastel up on to the black paper to make the southern lights. We printed out the Matariki stars and glue them on in the right formation onto the black paper.

It was really fun! The hardest part was ripping the paper to make the mountains. The most fun part was rubbing the pastels up.

They are going to look really cool on the wall!

This is my finished artwork!

Measurement

For maths this term we have been learning about measurement.
We started by putting ourselves in order of shortest to tallest.
Next, we looked at how we can measure the length of a room with our bodies.
Then we looked at how we could use different parts of our bodies to measure all sorts of things.

Achievements

We have celebrated lots of great achievements in Ruma Weka in the last two weeks.

Some of these were the first group of tamariki to complete all of their sight word lists.

Coming in the top three at our school cross country.

And receiving a certificate for showing Rangatiratanga in class.

Cross County!

Today we had cross country. It was wet and muddy but so we had to do it at school but we had so much fun! We had to run around the bike track, across the field and through the muddy fort. We loved it so much that we made some animations about it.

My Holiday - By Finnian

At  the weekend my family went tramping to a hut.  We slept at the hut and the next day we walked back to the car.  We saw a robin on the way back and on the way there is a  small bird I liked it.  I carried a backpack with my clothes in it.  When we got back we kept on driving to Hammer.   When we got there we had electric blankets on our beds they were warm.  Mum and Dad had electric blankets too. We went to the hot pools and I was tall enough to go on the hydroslides and I went on the new one and the Super Bowl.  My favourite one was the green hydroslide because it had lights which were shaped like arrows inside.  It was a great holiday.
